When you attach something to a spear, the resulting weapon durability is minimum of durabilities of items used. Hunting knife, your bottleneck is duct tape availability, and the hunting knife is the second best weapon to put on a spear after the machete, which is too rare to use IMO, so you're using your duct tape efficiently. High condition hunting knives can be found on trailer park zombies.
